ETHIOPIANS STILL WAITING FOR A VATICAN APOLOGY
The Pope of the Catholic church is presently on a visit to the Middle East and the fact that Vatican has apologized for the negative and condemnable role and position of the Catholic Church during the Second World War and the genocide of Jews makes it imperative that we remind the Pope and the Vatican once again that Ethiopians are still waiting for an apology for the support that Pope Pius XI and the Vatican gave to the invasion of Ethiopia by Mussolini’s fascist army.
The Vatican blessed the invasion and the invading soldiers, nuns contributed their rings to the war coffer and the Ethiopians were condemned as “heathens” in need of a civilizing action by the Italian invaders. Since then, the Vatican has not uttered one word of apology to the Ethiopian people and Italy has not paid any meaningful reparation to Ethiopia who lost a million dead as a result of the invasion and the brutal poison gas attacks.
The demand for an apology from the Vatican is just and fair demand, the least one can expect for the immense suffering that Ethiopian have had to endure from the invasion. The bright and young intellectuals of the country, the patriarch Abune Petros, more than 200 monks, and a million people perished. Patriots were beheaded and civilians hang from trees in dozens, thousands of women were raped, the invasion was brutal, vindictive and racist. The Vatican backed and supported this invasion and it is high time it makes an apology to the people of Ethiopia just as it had done in the case of Israel.
