THE SAVAGE REPRESSION IN THE OGADEN MUST STOP
The savage repression unleashed by the Meles Zenawi regime in the Ogaden region has become so bloody that the accusation of ethnic cleansing is becoming more credible by every passing day. All over Ethiopia, this repressive regime has made the passing Ethiopian year one of the worst in terms of the respect of human rights.
The Meles Zenawi regime sent its soldiers to invade Somalia and is committing massacres and atrocities that deserve world wide condemnation. The crisis in Somalia has worsened. In the same vein, the repressive regime unleashed a bloody counter insurgency in the Ogaden region and has committed atrocities against the civilian population. Given the real politick of international and regional situation, the regime enjoys the support of those who say they are engaged in a global anti-terror war. Yet, what the regime is doing in the Ogaden is so brutal and savage that no self serving claim of fighting "terrorists" can justify what is being done against our kin in the Ogaden. The EPRP has condemned the regime's invasion of Somalia and the terror in the Ogaden and continues to call upon peace loving forces everywhere to join it in its protest.
The ever worsening situation in the Horn of Africa is mainly attributable to the sell out regime in Addis Ababa that has trampled on every notion of rule of law and democratic governance. This situation has also been compounded by other local dictators and their patrons from the West who are playing havoc with the lives of millions of people as they pursue their own national agendas. The absence of peace is not the fault of external forces but the handiwork of the Meles regime and its cohorts in the region that have impose dictatorial rule on the people. This clearly indicates that the search for peace in the region as a whole must base itself on the establishment of democracy and the rule of law in the first place. The violence in the Ogaden is now mainly the work of the Meles regime and the problem is evidently being compounded by a misguided anti-insurgency war that is alienating and repressing the people as a whole.
The EPRP condemns this savage and brutal action against the people in the Ogaden and calls for its end without any procrastination.
