January 10, 2008
On Saturday, January 5, 2008, kindergarteners, first and second graders of Fregenet Kidan Lehitsanat School, a school operated by the Fregenet Foundation, joyfully celebrated their fourth annual Ethiopian Christmas with friends and family members. The celebration, which was held on the school ground, at Kirkos Kifle Ketema, Kebele 11/12, brought together students, parents, invited guests, local board members and staff members. All 140 girls and boys put on a Christmas show, including a fashion show that depicted different national dresses of Ethiopia, for their parents and guests. The celebration brought joy to the children and all that were present. Food and refreshments were also served.
During this event, the chairperson of the local board made a speech regarding the importance of early childhood education and parental participation in everyday activities of children. He gave out new clothing and T-shirts to all one hundred -forty students and gave away monetary gifts of 100 birr to each of the teachers and staff members. For the fourth time in so many years, the continuous generosity of supporters and board members of the Fregenet Foundation in Los Angeles made this monetary gift possible.
As always, this occasion was used as one more opportune time to bring parents, staff, board members, and local government officials together, to interact, to get to know each other, and to work collectively for the benefit and welfare of the children.
It is to be remembered that Fregenet Kidan Lehitsanat School, which now has an enrollment of 140 students, had only 31 children when it first opened its doors on November 9, 2004.
