20 YEARS OF “DISAPPERANCE” OF EPRP LEADERS
Press Releases

20 YEARS OF “DISAPPERANCE” OF EPRP LEADERS

JUNE 1991—JUNE 2011

JUNE 1991—TPLF/EPRDF forces, backed by others, attacked EPRP/A forces in Gondar and Gojjam and they were fortunate enough to capture several EPRP leaders while others like geleb Dafla, Wasihun, Dereje etc got martyred.

From Left Tsegaye G. Medhin (aka Debteraw), Aberash Berta (aka Meaza), Lema Hailu, Kebede Tesfaye (aka Abohav)

Tsegaye Gebre Medhin (Debteraw). Sitotaw Hussein, Yishak Debre Tsion, Belette Amha (all members of the Leadership Committee), Hagos Bezabih, Teklai Gebre Sellasie and Desalegn Amsalu were captured and Azanaw Demile was deported with others from the Sudan. All have disappeared since. The ruling Tigrean front (TPLF) has refused to comment on their whereabouts while unofficially giving different replies (they were never captured, they have been killed, etc). The case of these “disappeared” has been ignored/forgotten by international human rights bodies despite calls by SOCEPP, the EPRP and others for a reaction.

It is now 20 years since the above have been disappeared. Since 1993, other EPRP members were also caught in Addis Abeba, Arba Minch and Bahr Dar and also disappeared. In this case, we can mention Ms Aberash Berta, Lemma Hailu, Tesfaye Kebede, Wondusirak Desta, Abebe Ainekulu, Mot Baynor, journalist Berhanu Ijigu,Dilu Gebeyehu, Abayneh Shiferaw, Getachew Abebe,Getachew Workineh, Tamrat Gizachew, Dinku Shifferaw, Adugna Adem,Yosef Teshome.

SOCEPP condemns the repressive regime of Meles Zenawi and calls for an open account on the fate of the disappeared. SOCEPP also calls on international human rights bodies to break their unexplained silence and to demand that the regime gives account on the fate of the above. Let us all demand the immediate release of ALL political prisoners.
